Provisions of Arizona Law Halted
July 28, 2010 - A Federal court has announced that it will block, or "enjoin," certain provisions of Arizona Senate Bill 1070. Read the decision. Host Robert DiCello opined recently that "the Arizona law treads upon well established Federal law, in violation of the principles enshrined in the Constitution's Supremacy clause." It appears the Federal Court agrees. This now means the case goes forward, but for now, the State can't enforce provisions empowering a police officer to arrest somone on reasonable suspicion of being an illegal immigrant. HUGO CHAVEZ
On Sunday July 25, 2010, Venezualan President Hugo Chavez threatened to cut off oil to the United States, if Colombia (a country suppported by the U.S.) attacks his country. Columbia has accused Venezuala of giving refuge to rebels who would seek to overthrow the current government there. Speaking at a daily press briefing on July 23, 2010, at the State Department, Assistant Secretary (and guest on Real Law Radio) P.J. Crowley articulated the U.S position. He said the U.S. thinks there should be an investigation and that Venezuela itself has responsibilities to be forthcoming in responding to the important information presented by Colombia. But if Columbia's allegations prove true following an investigation, the question then becomes a practical one: where can Columbia go to get justice? [Read more].
